چکیده

Bistability of di erent synchronous #ring patterns arising in networks of pyramidal cells and interneurons which include depressing synapses is demonstrated. The #ring modes di er in their frequencies, in the type of #ring pattern and in their degree of synchrony. The network elements governing the frequency of each mode are identi#ed and ways to transition between modes are discussed. c © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Synaptic noise induces intermittent oscillatory-quiescent state transitions in a spiking network model

Spontaneous cortical population activity is often described as synchronous during slow-wave sleep and under certain anesthetics, and asynchronous during quiet wakefulness. The underlying mechanisms that control transitions between these cortical states are not completely known. To study the effect of synaptic noise on these transitions, we use a cortical network model with mixed neuronal types,...

Firing mode-dependent synaptic plasticity in rat neocortical pyramidal neurons.

Pyramidal cells in the mammalian neocortex can emit action potentials either as series of individual spikes or as distinct clusters of high-frequency bursts. However, why two different firing modes exist is largely unknown. In this study, we report that in layer V pyramidal cells of the rat somatosensory cortex, in vitro associations of EPSPs with spike bursts delayed by +10 msec led to long-te...

Forward suppression in the auditory cortex is caused by the Ca(v)3.1 calcium channel-mediated switch from bursting to tonic firing at thalamocortical projections.

Brief sounds produce a period of suppressed responsiveness in the auditory cortex (ACx). This forward suppression can last for hundreds of milliseconds and might contribute to mechanisms of temporal separation of sounds and stimulus-specific adaptation. However, the mechanisms of forward suppression remain unknown. We used in vivo recordings of sound-evoked responses in the mouse ACx and whole-...

Synaptic energy drives the information processing mechanisms in spiking neural networks.

Flow of energy and free energy minimization underpins almost every aspect of naturally occurring physical mechanisms. Inspired by this fact this work establishes an energy-based framework that spans the multi-scale range of biological neural systems and integrates synaptic dynamic, synchronous spiking activity and neural states into one consistent working paradigm. Following a bottom-up approac...

Intrinsic Stability of Temporally Shifted Spike-Timing Dependent Plasticity

Spike-timing dependent plasticity (STDP), a widespread synaptic modification mechanism, is sensitive to correlations between presynaptic spike trains and it generates competition among synapses. However, STDP has an inherent instability because strong synapses are more likely to be strengthened than weak ones, causing them to grow in strength until some biophysical limit is reached. Through sim...
